Forty-five Italian police and medical staff have gone on trial accused of brutality against protesters arrested during the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001.

The case, which opened at a court in Genoa, was adjourned until November. The defendants - which include senior officers from Genoa - deny the charges, including unlawful violence.

The 60th hearing in the trial against the 25 demonstrators accused of looting and sacking during the Genoa G8 events in 2001. Once again, one of the Carabinieri officials that played a key role in events in Piazza Alimonda was conspicuous by his absence.

The 59th hearing was devoted entirely to Mario Placanica, the former Carabiniere who shot and killed Carlo Giuliani in Piazza Alimonda on July 20, 2001. The session drew large numbers of journalists, enormous security and many members of the public.

After the summer stop in the first hearing of the trial against the 25 demonstrators under indictment for devastation and sacking during the G8 in Genoa 2001 two witness were heard.
The first two hours were spent in the examination of the witness Sebastiano Pinzone, Genoa’s Digos (political police), convened for the identification of one of the accused through photos, took while he was shopping in his town.

Genoa Public Prosecutor's Office continues its attempt
to intimidate defense team

Two laptops belonging to Genoa Legal Forum lawyers
defending demonstrators from the 2001 G8 summit in
Genoa have been damaged after being seized by
prosecutors, according to confidential sources.
The computers were seized at the order of Assistant
Public Prosecutor Giancarlo Pellegrino on March 16,
after public prosecutors Anna Canepa and Andrea
Canciani filed libel charges regarding reports on the
Italian Indymedia website.

Judicial sources have told the Legal Support team,
Supportolegale, that the two computers were not
working properly by the time they reached the Turin
court. As they were working perfectly when they were
seized, they appear to have been damaged on the trip
from Genoa to Turin, where they were due to be
inspected.

Tampering with sequestered material is a very serious
act. It also contributes to the Genoese prosecution's
attempts to intimidate the legal team that is working

However, some interesting points emerged, a number of which appear highly significant for the progress of the trial.

Among other things, the hearing touched on the methods and details of recognizing and identifying defendants in criminal trials. It emerged that participants at "non-authorized gatherings" are identified by the Digos security police and included in their register of names.

In a trial in which the defendants risk between eight and 15 years in prison, this is a very important point. It means that the identification system set up by public prosecutors is weak, opaque and indirect - one witness didn't recognize a defendant, while the witness that had made the original identification was absent.

Fresh intimidation from prosecutors trying Genoa G8 protestors, as laptops belonging to defense lawyers are seized following unrelated libel claims

The Genoa public prosecutor's office has apparently descended to new depths in its case against 25 demonstrators accused of involvement in the Genoa G8 clashes. On March 16, several officers with the plain-clothes Digos security police seized two laptops being used by Genoa Legal Forum lawyers. The operation followed charges of libel filed by the public prosecutors Anna Canepa and Andrea Canciani over remarks about them that appeared on the italy.indymedia.org website.

GENOA, March 12 - Police officers, prison guards and
medical staff accused of abusing protestors during the
2001 Genoa G8 summit have been charged with inhuman
and degrading treatment under Article 3 of the
European Convention on Human Rights. Numerous
protestors held at the Bolzaneto detention center near
Genoa in July 2001 have described the sadistic
treatment they received at the hands of officials,
including beatings, insults, kicks, punches and
threats.

A report by the ANSA newswire suggests that the public
prosecutors, Patrizia Petruzziello and Vittorio
Ranieri Miniati, opted for the "safer" choice of
inhuman and degrading treatment under Article 3 rather
than torture owing to "the duration of the treatment
in relation to the length of time the detainees were
held in the center." At today's preliminary hearing
into events at Bolzaneto, for which prosecutors have
requested 47 indictments, a 534-page memorial was
filed and explained to the preliminary hearing judge,

Three years have passed since july '01 and we haven't forgotten what happened there.

The processes/trials regarding what actually happened there and who is really responsible are still going on. At the moment, nodody is charged with the killing of Carlo Giuliani, nobody is actually responsible for the raid
